The Greatest Commandment
Memory Verse: "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." — 1 John 4:8

When asked which commandment was the greatest in the Law, Jesus declared that the first and great commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves. Upon these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:36-40). According to the Scriptures, love is not merely an emotion; it is the summary of God’s entire law and the supreme virtue of the Christian life.
The true essence of Christianity is rooted in divine love. God demonstrated this unmatched love toward us by giving His only begotten Son for our redemption (John 3:16). Because God is the very source and definition of love, showing selfless love to others serves as the primary evidence of our union with Him. Without this divine love operating in our hearts, any religious effort remains hollow.
Love: The Measure of Spiritual Gifts
1 Corinthians 13 makes it abundantly clear that no spiritual activity or supernatural manifestation can substitute for love. Love is the golden scale by which every spiritual gift and noble deed is weighed in the sight of God:
- Prophecy, Knowledge, and Faith: Though a believer possesses the gift of prophecy, understands all mysteries, and has mountain-moving faith, without love, that person is nothing (1 Corinthians 13:2).
- Tongues: Speaking with the tongues of men and of angels without charity reduces spiritual language to sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal (1 Corinthians 13:1).
- Sacrifice and Giving: Bestowing all goods to feed the poor or giving one's body to be burned profit nothing if charity is absent (1 Corinthians 13:3).
Without love, gifts such as healing, performing miracles, tongues, faith, and sacrificial giving lose their divine foundation.
Living Out the Law of Love
When the love of God is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Ghost, it transforms how you live, serve, and relate to others:
- Willing Obedience: Loving God makes obedience a joy rather than a burden. As Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15).
- Sincere Service: Actions toward others cease to be driven by mere obligation, duty, or self-interest. Service becomes a pure reflection of genuine care for your neighbor.
- Pure Speech: Love guards the tongue. When you love someone, you will not speak ill of them, gossip, or tear them down, for "charity suffereth long, and is kind" (1 Corinthians 13:4).
- Divine Peace: Walking in love fosters harmony. "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men" (Romans 12:18).
Ultimately, love is the greatest virtue a Christian can exhibit because gifts will cease, but charity never faileth (1 Corinthians 13:8). As you walk in love daily, you abide in God, bring peace to those around you, and assure the presence of the God of love and peace with you always.
